“We are to take who we are, add Him, and shine in this world – doing what He’s put us on this planet to do as moms and beyond – bright in flavor, bright in appearance, bright in us, bright in Him.” (p. 101)
When I first started reading this book, I almost made the mistake of dismissing it as something written for stay-at-home moms feeling overwhelmed by their children. I’m glad I kept reading! Caryn Rivadeneira (makes me think of the Riviera!) has obeyed God and written a book filled with valuable insights from Scripture for all women who have been blessed with children. No matter who you are, if you are a child of God, get ready to be blessed! Written with a warm, witty voice, Mama’s Got a Fake I.D. explores the many, many roles God calls a woman to fill and how she can blend each of these important roles with motherhood to become all that God created her to be.
Rivadeneira takes a realistic look at the role of women within the context of family, work and friend and how their walk with Christ is molded and shaped by each of these very important relationships. She also encourages women not to forget who they are as a unique individual once they take on the role of motherhood. She offers Scriptural viewpoints, personal experience and insights from a host of other moms to teach and encourage women not to be afraid to be who God created them to be. This is done not as a means to promote the fulfillment of selfish desires, but it is done to encourage us to seek God in every area of our lives to live our best life for Him.
Each chapter in the book ends with thought provoking questions to help women identify who they are within each and every role in their lives and places the answers ultimately within the context of obeying God at every stage of mothering our children. I loved the particular insight she shares about using our gifts and learning contentment within our current situations: “In the mix of these two things, we need to remember that our identities never lie dormant even when it seems like they’re lying pretty low…Instead, we’ve got to keep looking to God, casting those nets, as Rosalie wrote, in every instance of our lives – whether hemmed in or roaming free – to see how God wants us to use our present life to grow, to develop, to love, and to become more of the woman He made us to be.” (p. 149)
Mama’s Got a Fake I.D. is a gem of a book for ANY mother, and I would encourage you to buy your own copy and one to share with encouragement for a friend! I even have an extra copy to give away, so please leave your name and contact information along with your favorite mom moment, and you will be entered to win a copy of this great book!
