Heart's Safe Passage by Laurie Alice Eakes - REVIEWED

About the Book: (from the publisher)

One woman takes the treacherous journey toward redemption . . . and love.

All Phoebe Lee wants out of life is to practice midwifery in Loudon County, Virginia. But when she refuses to accompany her pregnant sister-in-law to help save her husband from an English prison during the War of 1812, Phoebe finds herself pressed aboard a British privateer.
Captain Rafe Docherty promises to get Phoebe's brother-in-law out of prison in exchange for information Rafe needs to exact revenge on the man who destroyed his family. As he realizes his attraction to Phoebe, she determines to get ashore before her patient goes into labor--and before her own heart is in danger. But an enemy in their midst threatens to end their plans--and their very lives.

My Thoughts:
“Often ‘good’ is giving up what we want for the sake of others.” She took a shuddering breath. (p. 324)

Oh what a journey Phoebe takes to get to the point where she can utter these words! Laurie Alice Eakes has captured a convicting trait in one of the main characters in her latest novel, Heart’s Safe Passage. My heart has been deeply touched and challenged by Phoebe’s journey. Her desire to act before she gives a thought to what God would have her do….ouch! Her character was so real to me!

As were all of the characters in this wonderful epic tale! Phoebe has already experienced her share of heartache by the time she is practically kidnapped into a treasonous relationship with privateers bent on a personal revenge. The Captain of the vessel, Rafe Docherty, is so driven by revenge that several people are put in jeopardy of their lives! What a mighty work God has to do before His presence is recognized and hearts are changed! The reader is taken on a breathless ride indeed!

It is a great pleasure to recommend this book to you. Beware…you may find your heart touched in ways you never anticipated!
