All Things Hidden by Tricia Goyer - REVIEWED & CONTEST

“A vine of faith and family that will live on for generations.” (p. 244)

Tucked away beneath the events of the past are events that have yet to be discovered. When Charlotte Stevenson gathers with her church family and begins to clean the basement in preparation for the church’s upcoming anniversary, she never dreamed that she would uncover clues in one of the longest-held, and best-remembered mysteries in history of the town. Charlotte’s life has taken on a lot of mystery in the past two years as she and her husband assumed the role of parents in the lives of her four grandchildren. How is she to guide these young people successfully into the future without repeating past mistakes that still linger so many years later?

As Charlotte tries to unravel the mystery of her great-grandfather’s past mistakes, her grandchildren are uncovering their own unique friendships and circumstances. Sam, Charlotte’s grandson who just turned eighteen, is spending lots of time with a new family in town and giving very little information about his activities. Emily is introduced to the school’s foreign exchange student during a class project and discovers things about herself and another girl in school that surprise her. Christopher, Charlotte’s youngest grandson joins his grandmother in trying to unravel the family mystery while pursuing publication in the local paper. What each family member learns along the way is that hasty judgements are often unfounded and can cause us to miss some of life’s most meaningful experiences and relationships.

All Things Hidden uncovers many truths about human relationships between family members and many other relationships. I imagine all of us are guilty at times of jumping to wrong conclusions about people and circumstances that are foreign to us. This story, set in a small Nebraska farming community reminds readers of the importance of being true to family and opening our hearts and minds to the people God brings into our lives for His purposes. Our pasts do affect our present circumstances to some degree, but what matters most is what God knows about our hearts and whether or not we reach out and show His love to those around us.
