This is another deceptively small book that is packed with lots of amazing things. There are chapters dedicated to things like “Mid-life crisis quiz” (chapter 7) and “Eight Rules for Dating my Son” (chapter 9) that will have you in stitches! Phil is a firm believer in the power of laughter, and I know he is convinced that our world has forgotten the joy found in this simple task. There are also chapters so poignantly true that you will weep like the chapters that share his first child leaving for college, his dad’s final stage’s of Alzheimer’s and the poem in Chapter 36 about the limitations of Alzheimer’s. If there is one thing Phil knows in his not-quite-fifty years of living, it’s that the Lord allows trial and joy to come to us all. He also knows that it is only God’s mercy and strength that gets us through sometimes.
Family Squeeze contains a lot of practical advice among Phil’s own accounts of this peculiar stage of living. He was consistent in reminding all of us, no matter what age we are, of what is lasting in this world and what is fleeting and temporal. If we live our lives to obtain only what this world has to offer, Phil knows that we will face aging with a lot of regret. However, if we live our lives poured out for others and enjoying the things that matter, like family relationships and our personal walk with Christ, then our lives will be rich until we finally draw our last breath and go home to be with the Lord.
It really is difficult to sum up all that this book has to offer. I highly recommend it to anyone between the ages of 40 – 60. There is something there that will touch your heart, make you laugh, make you cry, and long for a closer relationship with everyone you care about.
