MY REVIEW:

This story scared me. I would get so engrossed in reading the story that anytime someone walked in the room, I’d startle and scream. (ask my husband and sons if you don’t believe me!) If you want to read a story that will have you holding your breath one minute – well, maybe for a few pages – then relaxing in the local diner over a cup of coffee the next, then you MUST read this story! I cannot believe this is Mike Dellosso’s first novel! Move over Ted Dekker and Frank Peretti, there is a new star on the horizon!

I love suspense thrillers. But I especially love suspense thrillers with a good, believable element of true faith. Mike Dellosso blends these elements in a beautiful way that allows him to fictionally portray the spiritual battle taking place all around us for the souls of men. This book may be fiction, but the battle is real, and Mike captures both the darkness of human depravity (very scary character!!) and the awesome grace and forgiveness offered to all from the loving hand of God. (The struggle Joe and Rosa face as God works through them to help uncover the town’s long held secret is very realistic!)

Fair warning – this is not a book for the big honkin’ chicken club members! This is a very suspenseful and sometimes scary story. But you will devour its pages from front cover to back so fast that you will feel the breeze!! This well-written, fast-paced novel is a GREAT STORY! I highly recommend it and anxiously await another book from Mike Dellosso!!

MY REVIEW:

I know I’m reading a good book when I simply hate to put it down – when I’m reading every moment I can, in the car, before bed, between chores – I know this book is special. Deep in the Heart of Trouble did not disappoint! I’ve read some of Deeanne Gist’s other stories, and like the others, Deep in the Heart of Trouble drew me in and didn’t let go until the last page. Gist has a real gift for creating a sense of belonging to the time period in which her story takes place, and every character just adds layers of color and texture to the point that you are truly transported! Now that is the kind of writing I love!

“Essie Spreckelmeyer didn’t have a man, nor did she need one.” (p. 11) From the very first sentence in this book, Essie is the most eccentric, independent, unusual lady to grace the pages of fiction. I absolutely adored her, and by the end of the book I was cheering her in her newest venture! Gist brilliantly sets Tony Morgan - a disinherited oilman - in the opposite corner of this tale, and the story that grows between them is one of frustrating tension, tender forgiveness and breathtaking passion! Each of the characters in this saga, even the minor characters, add so much to the plot and action within the story that Essie and Tony’s relationship becomes real in your mind. (No wonder Mrs. Lockhart kept referring to the characters in her books as if she knew them! I loved this character!!)

I highly recommend this book to everyone who loves adventure and romance set in the late 1800’s during the Texas oil boom days. This is a well-written, well-paced story that will keep you up at night trying to finish just one more chapter! I loved it, and I certainly look forward to the next story coming out in 2009! Non-F.I.R.S.T presents Kenneth Poppe and Exposing Darwinism's Weakest Link

MY REVIEW:

My first red flag was found in the introduction on page 10. "This book will continually reaffirm that this Being who created us has not left the scene, fallen asleep or perhaps even died. And it will refer to this monotheistic being as God with a capital "G", though He goes by other names in other cultures – Jehovah, Allah, Maitou and so on – names that indicate man's historically diverse attempts to reach out to the same Being." Later, on page 177 another red flag. "The first event, "Let there be light" and the big bang seem an interchangeable description of the same event." I don't think so.

I STRONGLY disagree with this. Therefore, I KNOW that the entire premise of this book basically denies the fact that the Bible says what it means and means what it says. This man is basically a theistic evolutionist. He just doesn't ascribe to Darwinism per se. This is a cleverly disguised wolf in sheep's clothing. An educated man who is still promoting the same lies disguised in religious words. Don't waste your money on this one. Awaken the Dragon by David Aikman

MY REVIEW:
I don’t know a lot about Chinese culture. I’ve been brought up in a generation in which the communist government has indeed been the “dragon” of many sermons and Sunday School lessons throughout my lifetime. Now, after reading Richard Ireton’s novel Awaken the Dragon I feel like I have gained an entirely new understanding of the Asian culture. Truly, David Aikman’s years as a reporter are brilliantly reflected in this unusual tale.

In many ways, this novel was very different from what I was expecting. With the sinister looking knife on the cover, I was expecting a fast-paced, action-thriller type book. Instead, I was immersed in the daily life of a foreign correspondent - Richard Ireton. The action was slower and more sinister, because you were exploring a very deliberate, very otherworldly way of thinking. I appreciated David Aikman clarifying (at the end of course) the fact from fiction in the book, but as I suspected, a lot of the book is simply an accurate portrayal of what life is like when you are a reporter pursuing a story with dangerous world-wide ramifications. I especially enjoyed learning how a reporter must be constantly aware of the people in his environment and respect cultural nuances without offending anyone in order to gain the trust needed to ultimately get the story. It is a very dangerous game indeed!

America has always been the polar opposite of China. Many believe that China represents a very grave danger to our country as we approach the end-times before Christ’s return. Understanding what I do now, after reading this book, about the Taoist mindset, I have a better grasp of the danger that China represents – especially to the Christian faith. In this tale, Richard Ireton is a avowed skeptic. He lives his life in the moment and in hot pursuit of a breaking story. When he comes face to face with a sinister power not of this world, wielded by those who wish to overtake the Chinese government and vent their wrath upon Americans, he faces his own mortality in a new and deeper way. The fact that it is the Christian underground church members that come to his aide shows him that there is much beyond the realm of present reality which he must consider.

Aikman does an excellent job of painting vivid word pictures of China, its people, and its culture. The story draws you in, moment by moment and the danger mounts as Ireton reaches the pinnacle of the story he is pursuing. He makes it through only with the gracious help from some unexpected Christian sources, and along the way learns that there is more to life - including romance – that he has been missing. The ending leaves the door wide open for Ireton’s reporting to continue in a new and even more dangerous environment. I hope it won’t be long before we can enjoy another adventure alongside this intelligent, thoughtful reporter.

Another view from Robert Liparulo's Window!

It is my great pleasure to welcome Robert Liparulo back to my Window! I did my very first blog interview with Robert, and God has used his books in a unique way in my life since that time. I think you will enjoy his answers to questions asked about his latest young adult novels The Dreamhouse Kings series! Welcome back, Robert!

Given your talent for writing suspense thrillers for adults, what made you decide to write for the young adult audience? Where on earth did the idea of this series originate?

Quite a few book clubs of young readers (seventh through eleventh grade) read my adult books and I received a lot of wonderful letters from many of them. I had the privilege of speaking to a dozen or so of these groups/classes. I loved that they were so passionate about STORY. Their minds are so fertile, so imaginative. They wanted to know about the characters and storylines, as opposed to many of the adults I've spoken to, who cared more about getting an agent, the hours I work . . . the business side of writing. I got into writing not for the business, but for the stories, so these kids touched my heart in a big way.
I started thinking about writing for that age group. That reminded me of a story I literally dreamed up when I was eleven: The Dreamhouse Kings. I lived in the Azores, beautiful fairytale-like islands midway between the States and Europe in the Atlantic. I was a great place for kids and I sort of incorporated the feel of it into my dreams and, ultimately, my story.
About the time I was thinking this, my publisher "happened" to ask if I ever thought about writing YA's. Funny how these things happen, huh? ;)

Do you feel like young adults will relate to the way David and Xander’s dad misled them about the reasons they moved to the house in Pinedale?

I hope they don’t relate to it, as much as I think they’ll cringe at it as something that could happen. I think some kids will associate it with the perception that their parents have lied to them, or hidden things from them, whether that’s a pending divorce or a move or whatever. I do think there are things adults do and should keep from their children, in the interest of protecting their feelings or their innocence. As parents, we have to be careful to figure out which things your children don’t need to know, and take care not to outright lie to them.

When the Dad tells the boys on page 9 in Watcher In the Woods, “We have a secret. Sometimes you have to lie to keep secrets safe.” Do you think that sends a confusing message to kids? Can you explain your reasoning behind that scene either positively or negatively?

Good question. This is a theme I explore later in the series: is it EVER okay to lie, even to protect yourself or a loved one? I think most people understand that injury CAN be avoided sometimes through lies, as when Abraham lied about Sarah being his sister, instead of his wife. He feared that they would kill him and take her, if they were husband and wife, so he lied. But , later, God revealed the lie and essentially chastised Abraham for it. So, it’s something we take a hard look at in subsequent books.
My hope is that it doesn’t confuse kids, but intrigues them to know more, to find out how this attitude either helps them or comes back to bite them.

Your distrust between David, Xander and the dad seems to build as the series continues. They each want to stick together in their plans, but their emotions and personal desire to find their mom/wife seems to get the best of them time after time. Will we ever see this tension between the men in the story work positively?

Absolutely. Tension makes for a good story. Its resolution usually involves the themes the author is trying to address within the story. By the end of book two, we already see how David is tired of the sneaking around, even though he understands Xander’s different take on how to rescue Mom from the way Dad wants to handle it.
I believe we are constantly faced with very tough decisions, dilemmas in which both possibilities make sense. In the Dreamhouse Kings story, both Dad and Xander make sense in their arguments for how to do something as important as rescuing their Mom. The stakes are so high, it’s above either of them, really. I mean, in most things, you’d listen to your parent, even if you disagree: what movies you can and can’t see, for example. But what if your Mom fell overboard and for reasons you don’t understand, your Dad says, “leave her.” Would you? Or would you exercise the familial equivalent of civil disobedience—because the stakes (your Mom’s life) are so high.

Time travel has always had a special appeal to young adults, when and how did you first become interested in this concept?

With that dream I had when I was eleven years old. I have always enjoyed reading contemporary fiction involving time travel. Dean Koontz and Tim Powers have handled it wonderfully, in very entertaining and thoughtful ways. Some of the highly theoretical, technical aspects of time travel—such as can you meet your younger self and can you change time so you never were able to go back and change it that way—I either avoid or handle somewhat ambiguously. My intention is not to push my views on the “science” of time travel, but to have fun and entertain. An important part of the story, eventually, looks at the way God is outside of time. What’s crazy-freaky to us (time travel), means nothing to Him. That concept is , in the end, the whole idea behind the Dreamhouse.

I imagine you are getting phenomenal feedback from the kids who have already read your Dreamhouse Kings books. I know my boys DEVOURED them! What has been your favorite reaction so far?

A twelve-year-old boy made me a card. It was a drawing of himself holding the first book. It was really detailed, the person and the book cover. He must have spent a lot of time on it. There was a speech-balloon coming out of the boy’s mouth, saying, “I love Dreamhouse Kings and Xander and David and Mr. Liparulo!” It was really sweet.

What on earth do you plan to keep your readers occupied with while they wait until JANUARY for the next book to come out? (he!he!he!)

The delay between releases was my biggest concern when we set this up as a six-book series. I wanted the books to be like the cliffhangers serials I saw before movies when I was a kid. But with them, the resolution of each cliffhanger was only a week away. We decided that a lot of young adults won’t discover the books right away and the next book would be that much closer. For the readers who do discover the story early, we’re trying to get them involved. We’ve set up a way for them to influence the story in subsequent books, win prizes through a weekly trivial contest, and help spread the word (you can find more information at http://www.robertliparulo.com/dhk.html). I think it’s a lot of online fun for them to do, especially over the summer.

What exciting things is God doing in your life right now? Any parting words you want to share with your readers?

God has blessed me in so many ways! My career is rolling along and I get to fulfill my passions by telling stories. To paraphrase the movie Chariots of Fire, when I write, I feel His pleasure. My family is closer than ever, and we do so much more together than we did even a few years ago. My eleven-year-old just started a really cool novel about a guy stuck in a video game. I have three other kids who have their own wild interests and it’s a lot of fun to share their excitement for them. To readers, all I can say is, have fun. Enjoy the story.

To writers, keep writing! Finish things! If God put in you the desire to write, He will be faithful and will give you the opportunities to share that passion with the world.

MY REVIEW:

Ahhhhhhhhgh!!! You can’t do this to me! You drag me into woods so dark they absorb light only to introduce me to a house that shifts sounds around like so many shadows! Then you introduce a family with secrets and move them into this creepy house, and from the moment they arrive it is evident that NOTHING is right! Then you leave me hanging….in the House of Dark Shadows.

Xander and David King find themselves living in a house where nothing is as it seems! Nothing! In your wildest dreams you can’t imagine where these two wind up! There are portals throughout the house that lead everywhere from the local schoolhouse to events in the past that will raise the hair on the back of your neck!! The time they spend “through the portal” will leave you gasping for breath, because you will be holding it every moment until you get back to the creepy house! At first I could have strangled the kids’ dad because he seemed a little too eager to keep secrets about all of this weirdness from his wife and daughter. However, by the time I finally understood his motive…I still wanted to strangle him! But I didn’t feel so bad about that, because his kids wanted to strangle him too!!

If you want to read a good old-fashioned scary tale that will wrap your imagination in new directions, go buy this book today!! Robert Liparulo is the KING of suspenseful thrillers! Teens will eat this up and beg for more! My two teens LOVED IT!! Hey, so did I!! Talk about a cliff-hanger at the end!! You better be thankful that Robert Liparulo released the first two books in the Dreamhouse King series all at once! Buy them both or you’ll be sorry!!

MY REVIEW:

NO WAY!!!! NO WAY!!! NO WAY!!!!! I cannot BELIEVE Robert Liparulo can leave me hanging this way!!! I thought the first book in the Dreamhouse Kings series had a cliff-hanger ending….and now, in book two….NO WAY!!!

Suffice it to say, I am at the very height of frustration at this moment. I have just read the last page of Watcher in the Woods, and I am almost frantic to go get book three. Problem is, it won’t come out in print until next year! What am I going to do??? David and Xander are working in tandem with their Dad to find their mom. It is by far the most difficult thing two sons could be asked to do by their father. Trust becomes tantamount to everything they do or say, and yet each member in the family keeps finding ways to break that trust. They become driven to find the woman who has been so brutally taken from them after moving into this house with a host of time portals and creepy visitors.

In Book 2 of the series, Liparulo introduces two very sinister characters that just make your skin crawl! There is also a character introduced that offers a glimmer of hope, but in this book he is still trying to get to the King family from the east coast. Meanwhile, the members of the Pinedale community are beginning to question the mysterious injuries being collected by David and Xander, and it seems one of the new bad guys thinks he has the right to own the house.

The battle is on both in this world and the many other worlds represented by the King’s mysterious house to reunite the family while trying to maintain a believable front to the “real” world. But the lines between all of these time portals is beginning to blur, and Robert Liparulo leaves you hanging in the most unbelievable way!! Write faster!! Publish faster!! Don’t do this to me again! Please publish the rest of these stories yesterday!!
