Tabitha Eckles and Dominick Cherrett have both suffered great loss in their lives. Tabitha has decided that she no longer has use for a God who has taken so much from her life, and Dominick’s faith is struggling to accept his indentured status in the home of the mayor. When they collide – quite by accident – their lives seem to be inadvertently joined by an entire series of events quite beyond their control. Neither of them can deny the attraction for the other in their hearts, but they both fight valiantly against their feelings as they try to sort out their confusing life circumstances.

Set in Virginia in the early 1800’s, Lady in the Mist is a story that grabs the reader’s interest from the very first chapter. Suspicious behavior, strangers on the beach, press gangs, disappearing men, false accusations…and don’t forget the emotional storm of budding romance…all of this woven into a cast of intriguing characters that are trying to do the best they can under very trying circumstances. The suspense is increased by subtle increments as the reader gets to know the characters, and you find yourself totally engaged in the story and swept away to another time and place all together.

I love books that can cause me to lose all sense of time and place as I’m pulled into the story. I also enjoy discovering new authors, and Laurie Alice Eakes is new to me. I’m so glad to know that Lady in the Mist is the first book in The Midwives series! I’m also glad that I didn’t have to deliver children back in the 1800’s! This is a fascinating tale filled with suspense and romance, and I am happy to recommend it to you!

The role of midwives in history began to fascinate Laurie Alice Eakes in graduate school and she knew that someday she wanted to write novels with midwife heroines. Ten years later, after several published novels and a National Readers Choice Award for Best Regency, the midwives idea returned, and Lady in the Mist was born. Laurie Alice has a masters degree in creative writing and now writes full time from her home in Texas, where she lives with her husband and sundry dogs and cats.
