“Dishonesty always has a price.” (p. 151)
Wiser words were never spoken my friend. Walt Novak tries to live as honestly as he can, and his straight-as-an-arrow approach to life has even earned him the nickname “Preach” among his flight crew. But Walt’s introduction to Allie Miller sort of bends his heart and mind in new directions, and he must pay a high price indeed for the dishonesty that takes root in his own heart.
Allie Miller is an honest person too – with everyone but herself. When she meets Walt during a friend’s wedding, she gains a glimpse into an entirely different world – a world in which she is bold enough to be the person God created her to be instead of a woman who is cowed down by her parents as though she is six instead of twenty-six. Will she be obedient to God or will she remain under the reign of her very unreasonable parents?
Set in WWII, A Distant Melody incorporates much of what first drew me to Christian Fiction many years ago. There is an unpretentious, straight-forward story that is fleshed out with believable characters and interesting relationships. The domineering effect of Allie’s parents upon her life is a palpable force as is the joy and honest friendship that serve as the foundation of her relationship with Walt. The drama of separation and loss as well as fear and uncertainty were all hallmarks of that wartime era, and written letters were indeed a lifeline between friends and family. This story uses every character and the nuance of every relationship to build a faith-challenging story that leaves the reader encouraged and satisfied.
A Distant Melody will echo in your heart long after the final pages, and will cause everyone to think twice before employing a “little” white lie for any purpose whatsoever! I highly recommend this story!
