Thicker Than Blood by C.J. Darlington - REVIEWED

Christy Williams severed her relationship with her only sister, May fifteen years ago. Her life has spiraled downward over the years, and she finds herself all but caged by an abusive relationship and her own addictions. False accusations and a desperate stand against her demented ex-boyfriend leave Christy feeling both lost and yet strangely free all at once, so she determines to at least attempt to see her sister one more time.

Since losing her parents and being abandoned by her only sister, May Williams has found both faith and peace amid very uncertain circumstances. Her job on a local cattle ranch is in jeopardy and the ranch itself is soon to be foreclosed upon regardless of every attempt May and her friend Ruth make to satisfy the bank’s demands. When Christy shows up unannounced, May’s spirit feels a bit overwhelmed and she is forced to examine her own heart and her feelings toward Christy.

Thicker Than Blood begins as a contemporary tale of broken family relationships, wrong choices and broken hearts. Yet along the way, the pace accelerates and the story morphs into a suspenseful tale of greed, abuse and a battle against the darkest desires of the human spirit. Christy brings danger right to her sister’s doorstep, and soon they are all in a race against time to preserve life itself.

Thicker Than Blood shares what is true about the desire to belong to God and be loved unconditionally. The story captures the struggle for mankind’s inability to fully grasp the grace of God and the redeeming love offered to each of us no matter where we are or what we’ve done. This was a fabulous debut novel, and I look forward to reading more of C.J. Darlington’s work in the future!
