“We take what is and trust that God is making things we can’t yet see.” (p. 131)
Cindy Woodsmall is a master at weaving a story together using very unlikely people and circumstances. In her novella, The Sound of Sleighbells, she begins with a wood carving of a winter scene, a broken sled and a deceptive introduction to create a touching and unforgettable story of forgiveness and acceptance. The situations seem so unrelated at first, but by the time you reach the final pages, you find yourself satisfied with the beautiful story that has emerged within the lives of the characters.
Beth Hurtzler appears to be a woman in mourning, but she’s never been married. Loss has indeed touched her life, but she has allowed the loss to wound her soul. Jonah Kinsinger is a man who bears the physical scars of a careless childhood prank. Yet his soul also bears dark scars that he must constantly release back to God if he is to survive and thrive. Both of these young people have chosen to close themselves away amid their work to salve the pain of their wounded pasts.
Cindy Woodsmall brings these two wounded lives in touch with one another in a very unusual way, and creates what first appears to be an impossible situation. How things work out will surprise and please the reader and leave a longing for more of this story. Quite honestly, as much as I love Cindy’s writing, The Sound of Sleighbells seemed like a mere story outline compared to the rest of her stories. Perhaps she will choose to give us more of this story later! I certainly hope so!
This is not a “holiday” read as the cover might suggest, although I personally think it should be on everyone’s gift list if you have readers to buy for in December! The Sound of Sleighbells is a story of healing and discovery and the amazing facets of the human soul that long for forgiveness and acceptance. Cindy Woodsmall never disappoints, and this novella is a treasure indeed, especially for those who love stories set in the Amish community.
